Four Nikon Camera accessories that you shouldn't venture without.

Once you've got a dream camera and an ideal lens set-up it's time to think about the smaller camera accessories in life because it's often the little things that make a big difference. Whether you need additional battery power or a slightly longer reach on your lens, Nikon offers an extensive range of camera accessories that can help develop the performance of your DSLR and push your creative options. Camera accessories can be incredibly advantageous in many shooting situations. Many of them are compact, making them easy to tuck away in your camera bag's pockets. If you're stuck for what is really useful we've picked out four handy Nikon accessories that will help when you're out taking shots. Check out which ones you should be packing as part of your ideal kit…

Bullet point Battery Grip

There's nothing worse than heading out on a long day's photography only for it to be cut short due to the lack of power in your camera battery. This can often lead to a wasted and infuriated journey home. Prevent this from happening by purchasing an additional battery grip. They offer extended shooting time and make it much easier to grip the camera and shoot in the portrait orientation. Their hassle free designs make them easy to screw onto the base of your camera using the 3/8'' tripod thread. Nikon's MB-D10 (£259) designed for the D300 & D700 makes a great grip choice. It increases the frame per second rate from 5FPS to 8FPS in combination with EN-EL4a batteries. If you're a D80 or D90 user check out the MB-D80 (£149). Fitting two EN-EL3e batteries can extend battery life to a massive 5,000 shots – plenty for a weekend away if you're struck for mains power!

Bullet point Infrared Remote Control

In situations where you're constantly altering a scene an incredibly handy accessory to grab from your bag is a remote controller. These little beauties fire your shutter wirelessly as you press the button and can safeguard shots against dreaded camera shake. A remote control can save time retracing steps back to a tripod supported camera each time and speed up what we enjoy doing most – taking photos. D40/D40X, D60, D70/ D70s, D80 and D90 users should look at the Nikon ML-L3 (£16). With a 5 meter range it makes a brilliant budget buy. D200, D300, D700 & D3 users who need longer more extensive 8m (26.21ft) ranges should check out the ML-3 Remote Control which can be picked up for around £214.

Bullet point Teleconverters

Fancy getting a closer to your sports and wildlife subjects, but don't fancy forking out a small fortune for a telephoto lens? Consider a teleconverter instead. These are designed to fit between your lens and camera body and come in a variety of different magnification factors. A 1.4x teleconverter increases the focal length of a lens by 40%. Extending the length between the sensor and the front element affects the exposure, and in the case of Nikon's TC14 E AF-S Teleconverter (£297) designed for the full frame photographer using AF-S or AF-I lenses, it affects the aperture by one f-stop. For longer focal lengths the Nikon TC-20E AF-S Teleconverter, makes the best choice. At around £297 it'll convert a focal length by 100% when used in combination with compatible lenses and reduces the lens aperture by two stops.

Bullet point Speedlight Flashgun

Another versatile camera accessory that every photographer should pack in his or her bag is a Speedlight Flashgun. Capable of illuminating dark twilight scenes or brightening shadows in daylight conditions (known as fill-in flash) they can add extra spark for successful portrait images. For any entry-level flash first timers there's the SB-400 Speedlight Flashgun. At around £129 it's lightweight and runs off 2 AAs, is perfectly suited to small D-SLRs like the D40,D50,D60,D80 & D90. The SB 900 is the definitive flash option in Nikon's creative lighting system range. Suitable for FX and DX format users this Speedlight features a 17-200mm zoom range and flexible –180 degree to 180 degree movement. All for a price of around £319.
