The ultimate lens selection...
Our expert recommends an all-round lens collection for Nikon photographers and lusts after a couple of wild card lenses that would really be the icing on the cake for a complete camera bag!
Wouldn't it be great to have your very own photo caddy; an expert constantly at your side offering the best advice and picking the perfect lens from your bag to achieve every shot?
And for that matter, it would be even better if your camera bag had every lens you could ever want! Well, we can't follow each and every one of you around but we can tell you what we think would be the dream kit for a Nikon photographer who wants to cover everything. We've even added two luxury lenses that we know you'd love to get your hands on.

When you have a wide expanse in front of you a wide-angle zoom is just the lens for the job. Wide zoom lenses are used mainly for landscape photography thanks to their wide angle-of-view and excellent depth-of-field.
They're also ideal for extreme sports photography where close-up, distorting angles are the norm. These lenses aren't cheap but they definitely justify themselves. For the full-frame photographer the14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor at around £1284 will give you that broad vision. For The APS-C photographer the AF-S DX Nikkor 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED costing around £800 is our lens of choice.
Fast Prime
You have to admit it, we all love to indulge ourselves and what better way than with a fast prime lens? Fixed focal length lenses around 50mm are ideal for portraiture, reportage, general, and low light photography. Plus, they're actually one of the most inexpensive lenses available.
Having the ability to allow two or more stops of light in than a kit lens goes a long way, and the shallow depth-of-field at wide apertures becomes a really creative tool. For the full-frame photographer there's the AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G that costs around £294. For the APS-C photographer there's the AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G costing around £195.
Medium Zoom
The medium zoom is a versatile workhorse lens that covers the most popular range of focal lengths from wide to short telephoto. At the more expensive end of the market these lenses can be fast at f/2.8.
For the full-frame photographer the 28-70mm f/2.8 ED-IF AF-S Nikkor at around £1200 is the ideal medium zoom. For The APS-C photographer, while not as fast, the 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX Nikkor at around £299 covers similar ground.
Long Zoom
Another versatile lens any photographer should have is the long zoom. This lens is ideal for a long list of subjects ranging from portraits to live music and wildlife. Taking over where your medium zoom lens left off this lens is an absolute must for any photographer.
For the full-frame photographer there's the 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Nikkor at around £1514. For the APS-C photographer there's the 55-200mm f/4-5.6 AF-S VR DX Nikkor at around £235.
Macro
For those high precision close-up shots you're going to need a lens with the fine control of a putter. Look no further than the 105mm f/2.8G AF-S VR Micro Nikkor that costs around £600.
With a focal length of 105mm you'll be able to work at a medium distance from your subject making this lens the ideal macro all-rounder. If you're shooting with an APS-C camera you can get away with a 60mm macro lens instead.
Luxury lens 1st choice
You won't get caught out in the rough with this lens. The versatile 45mm tilt & shift lens is ideal for correcting perspective distortions in all types of photography. Not only this, you can also use it to make subjects look like miniatures or even as a portrait lens. The 45mm f/2.8D ED PC-E Nikkor costs around £1390.
These lenses aren't made specifically for DX format cameras but it doesn't mean you can't use them. Don't forget the crop factor, so for a fairly similar equivalent you'll have to go wider to the 24mm f/3.5D ED PC-E Nikkor at around £1370.
Luxury lens 2nd choice
When your subject can't be approached you need a lens that can cover a long distance, even in low light. What you need is a long telephoto lens around 300mm with a wide aperture of f/2.8.
Let us introduce the fairway wood of the photography world- the Nikon AF-S 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR that costs around £3980. It's not cheap but for a lens of this quality, at this focal length and speed, it's a very special addition to any kit bag.
